About the Business

When Jimmy Han announced the closure of his flagship Beer Belly location in Koreatown in Los Angeles last summer, many felt anxiety about the Long Beach location: After all, it had long been shuttered and, several months later, down came the neon sign and blackened became the windows.

Rose-mallow is another name for the hibiscus plant—and its image and use is found throughout the new space's layout and menu.

Gone is the dark interior and geometric wooding that welcomed Beer Belly and in are the white and blue tiled floor, neon lights, stacks of boom boxes, wicker chairs, and an alignment of booths that welcome (hopefully in the future) large parties. A custom billiards table from Carson-based Global sits in the space's easternmost space, complete with a chosen-for-this-location teal felt topping that will surely pair perfect with a white blazer and rolled up sleeves.

Think of Miami and Long Beach having a child in the 80s to a pair of hyper-minimal parents: The neon is clean but not overwhelming and the mixes of blues, teals, and pinks work without hitting the point of tactlessness. It is bittersweet, looking at the interior, because it is certainly a place that exudes luring; it makes you want to hang out.

On top of this, it makes even more sense, at least socially, to go from the Miami Vice vibes of Rosemallows into the tropic island feel of its neighboring tiki bar, which Squire noted will "of course" remain open.
