For more than two decades, Primal Alchemy has quietly become one of Long Beach's defining food brands—not through a traditional restaurant, but by bringing chef-driven cuisine to weddings, corporate gatherings, nonprofit fundraisers and some of SoCal's most high-profile events. Founded in 2001 by Chef Paul Buchanan and his wife, Dana Buchanan, the company was built around a philosophy that was years ahead of its time: locally sourced ingredients, seasonal menus and environmentally conscious business practices long before "farm-to-table" became part of the everyday culinary lexicon.

Chef Paul Buchanan's résumé includes some of California's most celebrated kitchens, having trained at the California Culinary Academy before cooking under acclaimed chefs including Nancy Silverton, Pascal Olhats and Joachim Splichal. Rather than opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant, Paul and Dana chose to channel that fine-dining pedigree into catering, creating fully customized menus instead of fixed packages. The result is a company that treats every event as its own culinary experience, whether serving an intimate dinner for a handful of guests or orchestrating meals for thousands. Their emphasis on relationships with local farmers, fishermen and artisan producers has remained the foundation of the business since day one.

What truly distinguishes Primal Alchemy is that sustainability is woven into nearly every aspect of its operation rather than existing as a marketing slogan. The company was the first food business in Long Beach to earn California Green Business certification and has since added Blue Restaurant, Ocean Friendly and Foam Free certifications while championing waste reduction, local agriculture and responsible sourcing. Those efforts culminated in national recognition when the Buchanans received the 2024 Achievement in Catering Excellence (ACE) Sustainability Award, honoring a business that has spent years proving environmental stewardship and exceptional hospitality can coexist.
